It’s Raining, Its Pouring…

Written by chris. Posted in Resources

It’s raining, it’s pouring and the old man is snoring. Its summer time and we should be outside enjoying the sun. Unfortunately, we’re stuck indoors, bundled up in sweaters, and feeling lousy as it rains outside. The weather forecast predicts that will it will rain all week. Below are a couple of activities you can do to keep yourself busy to avoid thinking about the dark, dingy, wet weather outside.

Movies – Rent a couple of movies or go through your collection of DVDs and watch some classics. Head out to a theatre and watch a new flick if you have already watched every movie out there.

Play Indoor Sports – In summer, many people play sports outdoors such as soccer or basketball. Who says you can’t play these sports indoors? Every city has a recreation centre and you can play sports and go swimming there.

Gym – It’s too wet outside to go for a run or a jog. Grab your sweats, runners, iPod and hit the gym. You’ll feel energetic afterwards and it’s a great way to keep active.

Read – School is over and during the year you don’t have time to read up on some of your favourite books. Sit by the fire and crack open a book. Read something that interests you or try reading a new genre.

Family Time – Spend some quality time with your family. Watch a movie, play board games, head over to the recreation centre as a family, or have a family dinner. It’s great time to catch up with your family.

Go For a Drink – Call up your buddies and hit up a bar. It’s supposed to be patio season and instead enjoy a nice refreshing drink indoors.

Spring Cleaning – Most students have moved back home for the summer and may not have had a chance to unpack yet. Start unpacking and clean your house or room in the process. Go through all your old stuff and throw some things out you may not need any more or donate old clothes to charity. Decorate your house or room and give it a complete new makeover.

Hope these ideas help and try to enjoy this week despite the rain.

The University of Waterloo DECA Chapter (UWDECA) is an organization based at the University of Waterloo that facilitates students with business acumen while igniting members’ interests in professional careers. UWDECA is an official chapter of DECA-U, the umbrella organization committed to engaging over thousands of students in business competitions.

UWDECA participates in various business competitions all over Ontario during the year, including the DECA-U Provincials, and Queen’s Invitational. We also host our very own annual UWDECA Spring Invitational business conference in March. This year, students from universities across Ontario attended the UWDECA Spring Invitational and had the opportunity to experience two case competitions, a social media workshop conducted by KPMG, and a networking exhibition. The conference not only built on delegates’ business skills, but also provided them with the opportunity to connect with other students through our Casino Night and Saturday Night Social.

In addition to the UWDECA Spring Invitational, UWDECA’s runs many events during the year, including an in-house competition, socials, training sessions, charity events, and much more. This year, at the DECA-U Provincials, UWDECA came out on top by winning numerous medals. Our chapter placed first at the annual Quiz Bowl competition and won the title of “Most Engaged Chapter of the Year “ award.

There are many exciting events planned for the upcoming year, starting with our Kick Off event in September 2011. Stay tuned to our website www.uwdeca.com for upcoming events and news!

April Fools’ Day

Written by chris. Posted in Resources

By now you’ve most likely been bombarded on Facebook and Twitter by April Fools’ day jokes, pranks and fake-outs, and you might be wondering who the heck ever decided this would be a fun thing to do. Well we’ve done the research (i.e. Google) and we want to give it to you straight and find out what pranks have already been done to you today or what you have in store for some unfortunate friends or co-workers!

So it all pretty much began in France way back when. New Years Day was moved from April 1st to the date we are all now more familiar with of January 1st. With the lack of cell phones, email, Facebook and Twitter back then you could imagine how slowly word traveled that some Lord decided to change when New Years Day would happen! In fact the word of the change traveled so slow that it was only until a few years later than some people were informed that they had been celebrating New Years Day on the wrong day for past three years. Now that’s a #fail. These people they were poorly informed in addition to those hooligans that rebelled and refused to acknowledge the change were labelled as Fools.

Once you were labeled a Fool it didn’t stop there. You would be the brunt of many practical jokes, ridiculed and continually sent invitations to parties that were non existent. How much would that suck! That just gave me an idea for an interesting Facebook invite though.

Share with us in our comments, over Twitter, or our Facebook page some of your most memorable April Fools’ jokes, pranks and fake-outs you’ve ever pulled on someone or vice versa!
